  Victims of ID Theft

If by chance you fall prey to the vices of these fraudsters then you should report the matter to the concerned authorities. This may not get back what you’ve lost but it will definitely prevent you from further damage.

If you are a victim of any of the following then follow the instructions given below each of them:

Cards and Online banking

If you realize that you are a victim of credit card fraud, debit card fraud, ATM fraud, or online banking fraud then follow the instructions below:

  1. It would be a good practice to change PIN numbers and login passwords
  2. Please call your bank official or customer care immediately and report the fraud providing complete details. The bank will then guide you through the necessary actions that you need to take.
  3. Please call the law enforcement agencies (police) and report the fraud.
Personal Information (SSN, Drivers license, Passport etc)

If you realize that you are a victim of identity theft, i.e. if your SSN, driver’s license number and other vital information has been compromised, then follow the instructions below:

  1. Please call the law enforcement agency (police) or specific government agency and report the identity theft.
  2. Based on instructions provided by the law enforcement agencies please take necessary actions.

Social Security Administration (SSA) — www.ssa.gov

Drivers License – Contact your DMV

Computer Invasion (Trojans, Key loggers, virus)

If you realize that your computer has been invaded by unwanted software programs, then follow the instructions below:

  1. Please shut down the computer immediately.
  2. Call your computer service personnel so that they can weed out the unwanted programs.  Do not use the computer unless the programs have been removed.
  3. If needed upgrade your anti-virus software.
  4. It would be a good practice to change all login passwords
  5. If you feel that any of your personal or financial information has been compromised, then call the law enforcement agency (police), bank, or specific government agency and report the fraud.
Online Auctions

If you realize that you are a victim of online auction fraud then follow the instructions below:

  1. Please call the online auction institution where the fraud has occurred and provide the transaction details.
  2. Please call the law enforcement agencies (police) and report the fraud.
